Eligibility Update for Small Schools, Homeschools and Virtual Schools
MATHCOUNTS has made a few updates to the eligibility rules for schools defined as small schools, homeschools and virtual schools.
Small Schools: MATHCOUNTS will no longer distinguish between the sizes of schools for Competition Program registration and competition purposes. Every “brick-and-mortar” school will have the same registration allowance of up to one team of four students and/or up to six individuals. A school’s
participants may not combine with any other school’s participants to form a team when registering or competing.
Homeschools: The definition of homeschool and the requirements for participation (including completed affidavits) are outlined on page 14 of the School Handbook, and these have not changed since last year. However, note that all homeschool students now must register and compete as individuals. Homeschool students may no longer combine with other homeschool students-even those in the same homeschool or homeschool
group/center-to form teams when registering or competing. There is no limit to the number of students from a homeschool or homeschool group/center who can register as individuals. However, students must
all register as individuals under their own homeschool’s name.
Virtual Schools: Any virtual school interested in registering students must contact the MATHCOUNTS national office at 703-299-9006 before December 16, 2011 for registration details. Any student registering as a virtual school student must register as an individual and compete in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition assigned according to the student’s home address. Additionally, virtual school coaches must complete an affidavit verifying that the students from the virtual school are in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade and that the virtual school complies with applicable state laws. Completed affidavits must be submitted to the local coordinator prior to competition.

Important Note:
The Rules of Advancement, Countdown Round and Trophy Policies have been recently amended. It is very important that all coaches, coordinators and participants review the advancement procedures prior to the Chapter Competition.
